Mieszkańcy całej ziemi mieli jedną mowę, czyli jednakowe słowa.
A gdy wędrowali ze wschodu, napotkali równinę w kraju Szinear i tam zamieszkali.
I mówili jeden do drugiego: «Chodźcie, wyrabiajmy cegłę i wypalmy ją w ogniu». A gdy już mieli cegłę zamiast kamieni i smołę zamiast zaprawy murarskiej, rzekli: «Chodźcie, zbudujemy sobie miasto
i wieżę, której wierzchołek będzie sięgał nieba, i w ten sposób uczynimy sobie znak, abyśmy się nie rozproszyli po całej ziemi».
A Pan zstąpił z nieba, by zobaczyć to miasto i wieżę, które budowali ludzie, i rzekł: «Są oni jednym ludem i wszyscy mają jedną mowę,
i to jest przyczyną, że zaczęli budować. A zatem w przyszłości nic nie będzie dla nich niemożliwe, cokolwiek zamierzą uczynić. Zejdźmy więc i pomieszajmy tam ich język, aby jeden nie rozumiał drugiego!»
W ten sposób Pan rozproszył ich stamtąd po całej powierzchni ziemi, i tak nie dokończyli budowy tego miasta. Dlatego to nazwano je Babel, tam bowiem Pan pomieszał mowę mieszkańców całej ziemi. Stamtąd też Pan rozproszył ich po całej powierzchni ziemi.

A ziemia była jednego języka i tejże mowy. I gdy szli od wschodu słońca, naleźli pole na ziemi Sennaar i mieszkali na nim.
I rzekli jeden do bliskiego swego: Pódźcie, naczyńmy cegieł i wypalmy je ogniem. I mieli cegłę miasto kamienia, a ił klijowaty miasto wapna.

I zstąpił PAN, aby oglądał miasto i wieżę, którą budowali synowie Adamowi.
I rzekł: Oto jeden jest lud i jeden język wszytkim: a poczęli to czynić i nie przestaną od myśli swych, aż je skutkiem wypełnią.
Przeto pódźcie, zstąpmy, a pomieszajmy tam język ich, aby nie słyszał żaden głosu bliźniego swego.
I tak rozproszył je PAN z onego miejsca po wszytkich ziemiach, i przestali budować miasta.
I przetoż nazwano imię jego Babel, iż tam pomieszany jest język wszytkiej ziemie: i zonąd rozproszył je PAN po wszytkich krainach.

And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
And they said one to another, Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.
And they said, Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
And Jehovah said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do: and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they purpose to do.
Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another`s speech.
So Jehovah scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off building the city.
Therefore was the name of it called Babel; because Jehovah did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did Jehovah scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
